Daikichiyama and Asahiyama are locations in Uji that offer spectacular views over the Uji area, looking down on the World Heritage Site of Byodo-in. At the base of the 'mounts' can also be found Kosho-ji Temple, a temple that has been in Uji since the 17th century, and another Wortld Heritage Site in Ujigami Jinja that goes back even further to the Heian Era.
The hills by the Uji River offer great opportunities for hiking at all levels, stay on the routes outlined, or go off track, either way the scenery is outstanding. Other points of note are a viewing platform on Daikichiyama, a location that has also been featured in the Kyoto Animation movie Sound. Euphonium!, and the tombstone of Crown Prince Wakiiratsuko on Asahiyama.
If you're lucky you might sight a deer running over the hills, you'll definitely see some wild boar tracks, and you'll also have the chance to feed some of the wild birds, most notable the Varied Tit Yamagara. Hold out your hand with a few nuts and the friendly birds will quickly fly down to feed. There are a number of feeding nets on the hills so the birds are used to not having to go hungry and as the routes are used by locals on a daily basis they are not wry of the human presence!
It goes without saying that HIDDEN PATHS asks you to respect the nature both animal and plant of the hills and surrounding areas. Relax, enjoy, and have a good walk!
The locations mentioned above (Ujigami Jinja, Byodoin, Koshiji Temple, Asahiyama, Daikichiyama) can be accessed by both JR and Keihan Uji Train Stations (Keihan is the closest). Driving is not recommended. Have a great time in nature, in Uji, Kyoto.
